Over the past several years, word has gotten out about Oak Hill School’s Kindergarten Program. It is an enriching, nurturing, and wonderful place for our youngest students, full of rewards and surprises and triumphs. It’s important to all of us that we keep our classroom numbers low so that we don’t lose that sense of intimacy, that feeling of community, and the caring, personal attention that makes our kindergarten such a magical space.
We have seen the number of applicants more than double. And so, in order to handle the applications, a new kindergarten-specific process has been implemented.
An overview of the kindergarten application process:
This can be by phone, e-mail, coming to one of our Open Houses, or visiting one of our booths at various Eugene Community functions. We’re a friendly bunch.
We’ve got a beautiful campus and nice kids. We’re proud of our school and happy to show it off. The best times for a tour are between the hours of 9am and 2pm as students are in class and our teachers are teaching. Seeing both groups in action is the best evidence of the quality of an OHS education. However, parents have busy schedules. If another time works better, it’s a simple thing to arrange.
This is a two hour session on a Saturday morning, from 9am to 11am. We can accommodate ten students per session. This block of time will give your student a chance to meet Ms. Kathy and to experience school at Oak Hill. We want to see and get to know the children in a social/academic setting in order to evaluate their readiness for kindergarten.
For applications for school year 2018-2019, the scheduled dates for the Saturday morning visits are as follows:
*Please note that the application and the application fee must be turned in on or before the day visit. Other documents can wait, but we do need the official application.
Ms. Kathy or Ms. Mary Ellen will administer the Gesell Assessment to each applicant. This is not so much a test but an evaluation tool which helps us to observe and measure a child’s readiness for the kindergarten classroom. This assessment takes approximately forty-five minutes and is primarily conversational. The Gesells are schedule for the week before the day visits because we find that it helps children to meet Ms. Kathy and Ms. Mary Ellen prior to the Saturday visit.
For school year 2018-2019 the Gesell dates (all Wednesdays) are as follows:
Please contact James Pearson, Director of Admissions,
at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 541.744.0954 x 105
to reserve a date for the Day visit and a time for the Gesell Assessment.
Once an application is complete, the Admissions Office circulates the application through an Admissions Committee comprised of a small number of faculty and staff members. We try to build a balanced, well-rounded class of eager, smart and sweet kids. It is difficult but decisions will be finalized and mailed out by March 30th, 2018.
