Eighth Grade

European History

In the History component of the seventh and eighth grade block we will investigate European history from the rise and fall of Rome to World War II. As historians we will analyze history through both primary and secondary sources and study various perspectives on all historical events. Aside from traditional tests and quizzes, you will embark on many creative endeavors that make connections across history and literature.

European Literature

In the English component of the seventh and eighth grade block we will explore European literature that aligns with the historical periods covered in the History section and study the development of what we now understand to be English literature. Through our many creative endeavors we will practice: active listening; public speaking; narrative, analytical and creative writing; and close reading. You will learn how to write in different modes including: analytical, expository, and persuasive.

Texts: The Hunger Games, The Canterbury Tales, Beowulf, All Quiet on the Western Front, A Tale of Two Cities, The Three Musketeers, The Book Thief, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Diary of Anne Frank, Julius Caesar

Pre-Algebra

Pre-Algebra is the foundation for all future math classes. This class is designed to strengthen previously learned knowledge of integers, fractions, percents, basic equations and fundamental geometric terms and concepts. The class also lays the foundation for mathematical concepts such as linear functions and graphing, exponents, ratios, proportions, linear inequalities, probability and statistics.

Students learn a wide diversity of concepts that promote understanding and familiarity with the more advanced concepts that they will encounter in Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. We frequently employ hands-on projects and other enrichment activities to engage students in math activities that go beyond the book, and introduce them to the “fun” side of math.

Algebra I

A strong understanding of algebra is important for future success in math. In Algebra I our main focus is on linear functions. However, we do spend time reinforcing the foundational mathematic concepts from Pre-Algebra. Algebra I also introduces students to variables, algebraic expressions, equations, functions, inequalities, and their multiple representations.

Geometry

This course is an integrated approach to the study of geometric relationships, utilizing algebraic and coordinate relationships along with geometric relationships. Students will learn to justify the geometric relationships and properties of geometric figures. A solid understanding of geometry helps students – understanding that reasoning and proof are fundamental aspects of mathematics – an understanding that is crucial to future success in math and science.

Science

I ask each of my scientists to question what they see, hear and are told. In eighth grade we explore the exciting concepts of chemistry and physics through experiments and hands on activities. We build roller coasters to measure velocity and acceleration and burn different mystery compounds to determine their composition. Each student masters the scientific method through inquiry based labs that gradually become more and more student driven. We focus on expressing our ideas in a clear, compelling and meticulously detailed manner through writing. The students showcase their ideas using many different forms: formal lab reports, APA style research papers, movies, songs, PowerPoint presentations, debates and blogs allow learners of all styles to be engaged.

Eighth grade is a pivotal year in building the skills and confidence necessary for a successful high school experience. I focus on helping each student love to learn; this educational partnership allows us to delve deeper to master the content as well as the necessary classroom and study habits that each child needs to excel as a student. Science is fun and full of mystery, each day we will work together to uncover a little bit more of the amazing world around us.
