In 3rd grade, we focus on independent reading contracts, 6-Trait Writing skills, cursive handwriting skills and core math skills. In addition, we integrate these subject areas into our history and science units.
We have exciting opportunities at Oak Hill School to explore and experience hands-on environmental education on our beautiful campus. This year, in conjunction with the 2nd graders, we studied one of nature’s recyclers, the earthworm. We created our own worm bins in the classroom and learned how to care for a creature so small. We have a beautiful garden bed where we planted fava beans which we will be harvesting soon for a scrumptious meal! We also uncovered the mysteries of mummies where the children researched mummies from all over the world and created dioramas out of recyclable materials to represent what they learned. The children practiced their public speaking skills by presenting their dioramas to the rest of the lower school and families. We recently explored American History and travelled the Underground Railroad with Harriet Tubman. The children followed up the history unit by completing their first five-paragraph research paper on a related history topic.
This year, our classroom has been enriched by many wonderful parent contributions. Earlier in the year, the children were able to explore creating a “Knock-Knock” video which truly reflects the laughter and love we all share as a class. The children are currently working on a Digital Storytelling activity, using their own personal stories. They are learning how to use our new iMac computers that were donated to our classroom this year. Digital Storytelling incorporates photography, music and script.
My goal in the classroom is to keep the children engaged and excited about learning. I enjoy seeing their faces light up when they accomplish goals they never thought possible! We work hard and have fun at Oak Hill School.
