Exploring with Ms. Lynn

My goal in the second grade classroom is to nurture the children’s natural joy of exploration, keeping them engaged and excited about learning and problem solving.

We work hard and have fun at Oak Hill School.

In second grade, we work hard building a strong foundation in reading to prepare for the transition from learning to read, to reading to learn. Phonics, fluency, and comprehension are supported through programs such as Reading A to Z, Fountas & Pinell, and reading contracts. We also enjoy time for silent reading and reading aloud.

Students learn the craft of writing in our Writing Workshops, based on Lucy Calkin’s Writing Pathways. As authors, they write many of their ideas as drafts, and then select stories to publish, learning the process:  revise, edit, publish. They love sharing many wonderful stories!

The second grade math book, Everyday Math, creates the core for instruction for math with the frequent use of supplemental materials, including hands-on manipulatives and games. Language arts and math are also often integrated into social studies and science units.

Students have exciting opportunities on our beautiful campus at Oak Hill School to explore and experience hands-on environmental education.

Not only do second graders enjoy studying Simple Machines, Weather, and Secret Formulas, they also work with our naturalist to learn about pollinators; in particular honeybees, where they learn to maintain our honey hives campus.

The social and emotional development of the children is very important at Oak Hill.

Children learn tools to help with communication and to help manage feelings through the Second Step program. Each child’s well-being is supported by all the teachers throughout the day, which creates a wonderful environment for children and an exceptional work environment for teachers.
